Verizon

Verizon closed another trouble ticket on us again today. That makes 5 now. 5 trouble tickets opened. 5 trouble tickets closed. I keep calling, Verizon keeps promising, nothing happens. Nobody who promises to call ever does, they just close the ticket and ignore the problem.

PING!

Try this from the command line:

ping -n 100 yahoo.com
Do you see alot of lines that say "request timed out"?
I do.
Many are returned in 37ms, but 49% are "lost".
What happens to pings that get lost on the internet?
Why do so many get lost trying to find their way back here?
Why am I asking so many questions?
Do I really expect an answer?
Is there anybody out there?
Where IS my Pink Floyd album?

Oddly enough, when I was on the phone with tech support yesterday, they sent me to infospeed.verizon.net and it showed 711.1 kbps. Strangely enough it shows the exact same number today...

DSL Still Slow

After 6 days, Verizon closed my trouble ticket without fixing the problem. No explanation, nothing. I called tech support. Another hour of turn on your modem, turn off your modem, blah, blah blah.
And then they tell me there must be something wrong with your computer, because everything is fine at this end.
I asked to talk to a supervisor -- long pause -- I'll see if I can find him. -- on hold for 5 minutes. -- I can't find him I'll have him call you back.

I'm waiting...

DSL Still Slow

Verizon didn't call. (5 days and counting)
They have a place on their website where you can check on your trouble ticket. Mine is still classified as active.
I wonder what inactive looke like.

Man Leaps From Car to Retrieve Cigarette

This ABC News article speculates that after nearly getting killed for a cigarette, the man may want to quit smoking.
Maybe he should stop drinking, too, once he thinks about why he jumped.

Arizona Wildflowers

We took a few pictures of the wildflowers at the place in Arizona. I've never seen that much variety at one time.

The thumbnails are up now, I'll keep trying to upload the larger linked pictures.
update: the links will have to wait.

DSL Still at a Crawl

When I called Verizon on Wednesday, the polite young man on the other end of the phone was apologetic for any inconvenience this may be causing us, and be sure to call us back if there is anything we can do...

He also said the troubleshooter would be in touch within 48 hours.

I called Thursday night , just because the squeaky wheel gets the grease / the crying baby gets fed first sort of principle. If you bug 'em enough they can't ignore you. The lady seemed only slightly annoyed at having to talk to a customer, and assured us the troubleshooter would call, after all, it's a 48 hour ticket and only 24 hours have passed.

Basia called Friday night. Same reason. The person on the other end was sure someone would be getting with us shortly.

As I write this post on Saturday morning, nobody has called us back.

DSL

My DSL is really really slow when it connects at all. It must be related to the cut.

update: I was on the the phone with tech support, they think there's something wrong with the line. (hmmm no kidding).

Back Online

Verizon sent their best man over this morning and fixed the wire.
Correction: The phone works OK. We're almost online.

We're Back

We've been in the mountains of northern Arizona for the past week.

The Weather

The skies were clear 5 days out of 7. Daytime temperatures were around 70, nighttime lows below 40. there was ice on the dogs' water dish one night.

The Dogs

Star enjoyed herself chasing the occasional jackrabbit. Chance followed Star into the woods one time but did not return with Star. We became concerned. Basia circled uphill while I went along the driveway as far as the road. No Chance. I circled uphill. No Chance. Basia jumped in the truck and drove along the driveway and met Chance coming back. Chance was gone about 45 minutes, but he's not saying where he was or what he did while he was gone.

The Construction

Greg heard we were going to install a chimney for the little cast iron boxwood stove we bought a couple of years ago, so he came over and helped. After giving the caulk and sealers a day to cure, we fired up the stove, opened the window and door and burned off all of that new stove smoke and stink. That little stove is more than big enough to keep our cabin toasty. Basia returned the favor by giving Greg a haircut.

The Recreation and Relaxation

Some time was spent sitting in the shade. Some time was spent sitting in the sun. Much time was spent mixing vodka martinis -- Stoli 3:1, stirred with no ice (roughing it), extra olives, extra dirty. This recipe was tested and re-tested many, many times and is believed to be the best, as far as I can remember.

The Bar-B-Que

We barbequed over a wood fire several times. Steaks. Chicken. Pork. We used Basia's barbeque sauce. WOW, that's good.

The Wildlife

There are turkeys running all over the place, wild turkeys that someone raised and are returning to the wild, but aren't afraid of people yet. A hen turkey walked right up to us. Star chased her away.

Home Again (Saturday)

We left before noon, got home before dark
The phone's out and there's no DSL.
One of the neighbors had a tree that was growing next to the utility pole, now the tree is trimmed and there's a bunch of wires cut through. I'm not saying the neighbor cut the wires by malice or ineptitude, but the wires used to be within the tree, and now that the tree is cut, so are the wires. I can see at least 3 severed lines hanging there. I wasn't home, so I didn't see anything at the time, I don't even know for sure what time it happened, but the last message on the answering machine was from the day we left.

I mean the phones are really, really dead, no clicks, no hiss, no buzz, no question.

I called Verizon from my SPRINT cell phone. They tested the line and said it was OK. I can see the wires are cut and they're telling me it tested OK. I dialed home from my cell phone and it rings, so it must be OK, maybe it's the same test, huh? They said they might come out some time Monday to fix it.

Can you hear me now?

NO, MY PHONE IS DEAD!

Sunday

Can you hear me now?

NO, MY PHONE IS STILL DEAD!
