Cleaning crew downs $4k worth of booze

Hey, man I thought we were supposed to clean out this bar!

Father's Day

I called Dad yesterday. He's doing well. His garden's in, and they're eating asparagus already. I'm not sure he really wants to hear that we're eating our own tomatoes in soCal while his plants (in Iowa) are just now starting to flower, but I told him anyhow.

M. & K. came over yesterday, brought me a fathers day bottle of Jack Daniels. We ate Hottest Habanero Bar-B-Que on pork and fresh tomatoes and JD.

Tsunami Warning

There was a 7.0 magnitude earthquake last night (~7PM) off the coast of northern California. A Tsunami warning was issued for pretty much the entire west coast. I heard about it after 9PM. I would have been under water by that time if there really was a major tsunami. Shortly after I heard about it, the warning was rescinded.

I just felt an earthquake. The USGS gave it a preliminary 5.6
ps That's about 100 miles away. There have been a whole bunch of 1's and 2's since then. I only felt the original, it was a gentle east-west motion followed by a gentler north-south motion. Star felt it too. Chance didn't. Basia didn't.
There are no reports of damage yet.

The Disk has Arrived!

We called verizon Thursday night to cancel our DSL and phone service. We had to call 4 different numbers and explain what the problem was, but they eventually agreed to cancel (gee, that sure was nice of them).
The WinPoeT CD arrived yesterday, you know, the supposed solution to all our problems. I'm putting it in the box with all of the phones, cables, answering machines, modems, DSL filters, etc., that I won't be needing anytime soon.

Ahh, much better!

Well, that's a lot faster than verizon ever was.

pings average 92ms with 0% lost packets.

To Verizon - You're Fired!

Verizon says they will be giving us a month free service because of the trouble we're having. I would rather have my DSL back, but I doubt it will ever be restored. It was good while it lasted, but now it's broken and Verizon doesn't know how to fix their problem.
It's not like they've gone out of their way to lose my business, it's just that they've done nothing to keep it.
That's why I called Road Runner. The installer came today. The bill's going to be an extra ten bucks a month, but the speed is about seven times as fast. All in all, a much better deal.

You're outa here, you slackers!
Hit the road!

Can you hear me now!
(making rude gesture upside down)
Then maybe I should turn it UP!

Top 12 Things DSL Stands For

What does DSL stand for?
I've been asking myself this question alot lately, and I came up with these answers. (Actually I came up with a few others, but these are the nicest ones.)

Top 12 Things DSL Stands For

12) Draw Subscribers Loot
11) Disregard, Shrug off, Lapse
10) Don't Stand in my Light
9) Damn Slow Lately
8) Doesn't it Suck Louie?
7) Disk Sent Late
6) Disenchanted Subscribers Lamenting
5) Denied Service, Loser!
4) Die, Stall, Lag
3) Dawdle, Slouch, Loll
2) Descended from Satan's Loins

and the number one thing DSL stands for...

1) It doesn't stand at all, it just lays there in a puddle of its own filth, convulsing and stinking up the place. (do I sound bitter?)

12 kbps? It seems much slower...

Latest Results:

Pings are running about 103 ms with 55% lost.

UPDATE: I remember back in 1988 when dinosaurs roamed the earth, I had a Mac SE30 with a 28.8kbps modem, it seemed kinda slow. Verizon DSL is half that speed.

We spoke to a technician at Verizon who says they're "migrating" their system to PPPoE. All we need to do is install WinPoeT from the CD he's sending us. (I'll hold my breath)

I looked up WinPoeT and PPPoE on google and it appears the whole point is for Verizon to have more control over the connection and to "preserve the dial-up experience".

They have deen quite successful at "preserving the dial-up experience" already. I certainly feel like I'm back with AOL -- slow connections, dropped connections, timing out, lousy customer service, aggravation...
